Fanboy and Chum Chum

I've been working at Nickelodeon on Eric Robles' show called "Fanboy and Chum Chum". It's a fantastic show. I really think it's gonna be a hit. I'm painting title cards, doing color scripts, (lighting reference for the CG team), and doing paint overs for some shots where it's faster to paint than model. He's a fun one. One of the characters gets his hand burned, and I get to paint nasty little blisters. OUCH! It's a GREAT show, and I want to thank Eric for having me work on it. He's a fantastic guy and man is he talented!!!! Check it out when it has a sneak peek Nov 6th after spongebob and Nov 7th at 10:30 am on Nickelodeon! YOU WILL DIG IT!!!!!

Soldier

Here is one I did a while ago. I've been trying to get a bit more painterly with my approach lately. This was done from a really rough sketch in sketchbook pro. I then went over it in photoshop. Hi?

Lunch Time Memory Drawing

Me and my friend Alex Chavez drew at lunch today and we did an exercise called memory drawings. We pick someone we see and take mental notes, then draw the subject from memory to see what we remember. It's a great way to build up your observation skills. My buddy Stephen silver introduced me to this exercise. Try it!

Here is a piece I did for the upcoming Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo that I'll be attending. This is my third year attending and I got to say it's one of my favorite conventions. Their theme every year is cowboys, so I did a Cow-Whaleboy for the booklet they distribute at the Con. They also auction off the original artwork for charity. See ya there April 26th and 27th.

"Charred Heart"

I just wanted to thank everyone who came out Saturday to the show I was a part of. Thanks again to Shane Sato and Buckwild Gallery for putting it all together.

I thought I'd share the painting I did for the show. They asked all the artists to paint on a skateboard. The theme was kind of an anti Valentines day type-o-thing. Mine is a dragon breathing Hot blue fire an a charred heart. Kept it pretty simple, but it got me excited about painting again. This piece and all the other pieces are for sale and will be on display at the gallery for the next month. Go and check out the show if you can!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I've been pretty busy with my new gig. I've been having a lot of fun just drawing right in photoshop at work. I did this silly creature pretty quickly in photoshop, trying to adopt a more painterly approach. I don't know if it's successful or not, but I wanted to share. It's my first stab working this way. It's fun trying out new techniques. C Ya!

Force, Character Design from Life Drawing

Sorry for not posting too much since Comic Con. I've been quite busy with my new gig. I started over at Heavy Iron studios as a video game concept designer. It's a great job. Wonderful people, and I am learning a bunch of new stuff.

This is a piece I did for an upcoming book called "Force, Character Design from Life Drawing". It's a really cool book that I was asked to be a part of. All the artists choose from a bunch of photos that were given to us, and then we explain our process of doing the piece. I think it's gonna be a really cool book, with a ton of amazing artists who I am honored to be put with. Thanks to Mike Metesi for letting me be a part of it. I think it will be out early next year.

The Toy...

We just got the toy samples in, and with the exception of a few minor tweaks, I couldn't be happier. It's taken a bit longer than I had hoped to get them out, but I think it will be worth it. The toy should be getting here sometime in April, if I am not mistaken. I honestly thought we would have had them by now, so I am sorry. We are going to be selling them at www.whaleboytoy.com. Keep checking back!

I still haven't calibrated the cintiq, so I'm not really sure how the color came out.

Oil Painting

A couple of weeks ago, I started taking a oil painting class at the LOS ANGELES ACADEMY OF FIGURATIVE ART with Rick Morris. It's a really cool class. Rick is awesome.

I figured that it was about time I get off my lazy ass and start painting. It's been a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time since I've really painted, and I am starting to like it.

The first class was a bit tough. I did a pretty stiff figure painting. It was quite uninspired. The second week I did this one. It's certainly not perfect, but I felt more comfortable with it. I figured that instead of doing a bunch of realistic paintings, I'd rather paint some figures, the way I like drawing them. Kinda, "Jacked up." It's more in line on how I'd like my paintings to be. It made sense, and I had a lot more fun.

This is a study on value using black and white paint only. I am finding for me that painting is a different mind set. I really need to take my time more, learn to slow down a bit.

Back to class tomorrow night. Wish me luck.

Caricature Wars

Sorry that it has been so long since I've posted anything. I've been real busy with my new gig. I'm really enjoying working with some ridiculously talented artists John Nevarez, Sam Michlap, Michael Humphries, Kristen Lester and Greselda Sastrawinata just to name a few. Check out the links to their sites in my link list.

Kristen Lester has the habit of doing enormously funny drawings of her co-workers. The first one is of John Nevarez and Myself. I had to strike back. It's all in good fun, but my bud Carlos Ramos had good advice for when you caricature someone. Even if you love the person you are drawing more than anything in the whole wide world, you have to hate them for the time you are caricaturing them. It will make your drawing much funnier. You have to draw from your dark side.

WONDERCON WAS A BLAST!!!!

Wondercon was The BOMB!!! It was such a great time.

Here we are at Wondercon last week from Left to right is Myself, Flo (she was kind enough to model our new Whaleboy T-shirt around the Con the day before), Ed Acosta, John Nevarez, and Jose Lopez.

Thanks to all the people who came by over the weekend to say hi. We had such a blast meeting everyone.

I feel so fortunate to be sharing a booth with my pals Jose Lopez and John Nevarez. They are two of the most talented people I know. John was selling his amazing sketchbook and drawing like a man possessed, Jose was previewing his upcoming sketchbook featuring "Mariachi Samurai" which should be out in April, and selling prints and original sketches. Check out their Blogs at http://john-nevarez.blogspot.com/
http://desoluz.blogspot.com/

Ed Acosta, (one of my Whaleboy partners. (Taesoo Kim couldn't make it)) was there too. Thanks Ed, I had such a blast hangin' and promoting Whaleboy with you. Ed plans on getting a sketchbook out by Comic Con. He is a character Designer for Family Guy. His drawings are hilarious.

Next to us were John and Shelly Loter, who were awesome. We couldn't have asked for better neighbors. check out their site at http://www.loter.com

Around the corner from us was Louie Del Carmen and Octavio Rodriguez who were both selling their amazing books. Pure inspiration. Check out thier blogs at http://www.randomanomalies.blogspot.com http://www.thecano.blogspot.com. It was great to finally hang with the legendary Octavio. He came to hang out for drinks and dinner on Friday and Saturday night, and he shared the pain of getting up early for the Con with a hangover.

My bud David Coleman was there selling his sketchbookbook and prints. That guy is amazing, and a great fella. http://davidcolman.blogspot.com

It was great to see Alberto Ruiz too. He came by to chat as well. His stuff is ridiculous. check his work at http://processjunkie.blogspot.com/

I picked up some sketchbooks from Sean "Cheeks" Galloway and Alina Urusov. Truly amazing work and very nice peoople. I wish I was able to chat with them more. They are at http://cheeks-74.deviantart.com/gallery/

Rock T-shirt design

Here are a few Random sketches from my sketchbook.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

As I pulled into my driveway, I noticed on my wood gate, that there were a bunch of these Knots all over it that looked like creepy little faces. I pulled out my sketchbook and drew this in my car based on one of these set of knots. There are faces in everything. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Inspiration pt.3: John Nevarez

For my third entry for the people who have been an inspiration to me, this man probably needs no introduction. John Nevarez. I met John at the Animation Academy in Burbank a few years ago. His drawings just flowed out of him. I wish I had gotten a chance to know him better then, but I finally got the chance to this year at the San Diego Comic Con. He and I shared a booth this past year, and immediately, I remembered not only how amazing of an artist he is, but what a genuine, fantastic, guy as well. I just watched how effortlessly he would draw at our booth. One picture after another, and so generous too. He was giving away drawings, like they were Halloween candy. This is the only one I got, and if I remember correctly, he didn't even care for it. I snatched it up. I love this! John, you are too humble.

John is one of the nicest, most humble and most talented, truly someone I consider "real", and proud to call my friend. Thanks John! Lookin forward to sharing a booth with you next year in San Diego. Check out his blog (I'm sure you already have) at www.john-nevarez.blogspot.com/

wacked out figures

These were done in a Figure drawing class taught by my friend Mike Metesi at Nickelodeon. We were told to really push the proportions. Mike is a fantastic teacher. He has just opened a school in Passedena called the Entertainment Art Academy and has classes for figure, animation, illustration, storyboards, you name it. Great classes! Great teachers! check out the link for more info. www.enterartacad.com/

Heads

These are some head sketches from life drawing. Some are the model, some are the other artists, drawing the model.
I have been taking classes from Karl Gnass (bottom right) for a couple of years now. He is truly a master of the figure, a fantastic teacher, and a friend. I want to express my appreciation to him, and thank him for the knowledge that he is constantly sharing. You rule Karl! Check out his site, and buy his book at www.spirit-of-the-pose.com. His book is amazing.

Head Sketch

I drew ths inside one of my sketchbooks that I sold to someone. I liked it, so I scanned it before I gave it to them. He's kinda silly.

Neanderthal

I was a bit bored at work, not due to a lack of work, just kinda burnt. We were watching a Steve McQueen movie called The Cincinatti Kid and there was this piano player singing in a bar. She had this "Face" that was amazing. We paused it, drew her and then I drew her again, without looking at the first drawing or the TV. It's a great excercise. Stephen Silver showed me this excercise. It's a lot of fun. The drawing that you do from memory, tends to come out better than the one, copied from the source. try it.

Random Crap

Some of these I drew at Costcos during lunch. There are always interesting people shopping at Costcos. The rest is just a bunch of random crap from my sketchbook.

Inspiration pt.2: Taesoo Kim

I've decided to give props to another friend of mine, who can draw circles around anyone I know. He's also one of the most modest people I have ever met, and he's about to be a father within a week. He and his wife Michelle are two of my very favorite people in the world as he is one of my favorite artists.

I met Taesoo at Disney, and immediately he pissed me off. Not by anything he said, but it was how f%$#in' amazing he could draw. We got along right away. We would sit and do drawing challenges, by saying, "OK, draw a Leprechaun”, or “Draw, a Platypus", or whatever, and we'd compare drawings. I'd be humbled every time. He's one of those guys that can draw anything.

Since I've known him, we have worked on many projects together and have learned so much from him. He is the Co-Creator along with myself and our friend Ed Acosta of a character we’ve been pitching for an animated series, called "Whaleboy". I have high hopes that this character will take off, cause it would be such a pleasure to work along with someone as talented as Tae again.

I also just want Taesoo and Michelle to know that my thoughts are with them during the birth of their son Tesoo Jr. You guys are going to be fantastic parents. I can’t wait to meet Lil’ Tae.

Here are some of his drawings from his sketchbook. Check out Tae’s Blog at www.taesookim.blogspot.com and www.michelleyi.blogspot.com.

Inspiration: Stephen Silver

Every week, I'm gonna try to give props to fellow artists who have been an inspiration to me. Certain artists you might not have heard about. Other artists, like this guy, Mr Stephen Silver you have.

I met Stephen at the Animation Academy in Burbank, and was immediately blown away by his work. I remember all the students and teachers surrounding his portfolio in awe of his artistic abilities. A year or two later, I would start to go sketching with Stephen, Justin Ridge, Sean Charmatz and Chad Woods from Nickelodeon during our lunch hour. We'd always be searching for the best places to draw, be it Starbucks,Hooters, Costco, or any other place, where interesting characters might be lurking. During that time I learned much from him, and we also became good friends. He has since been working at Sony, designing characters for a feature film, which will surely look incredible.

Stephen has also shown me a lot about self publishing. He truly encouraged me to self publish my own sketchbook, and the business that goes along with it. It's rare to meet such a patient artist so willing to share their knowledge with others, the way Stephen has, and I can't express how much I've appreciated it.

These two caricatures of me were generously drawn in his books that I got from him. BAM!!! He just busted these out on the spot. Pretty amazing stuff. Thanks man! Let's get together and draw soon!

I did this for a video game. It's not done yet.

Homer

This is a drawing that was influenced by a documentary I was watching, about appalachian families. The people in the documentary were very interesting to say the least.
This is my first post. Hi.
